// 7-Inch Announcement / Hector Premiere / USA Tour / Toronto // 09.09.2014

Hello Love,

We’ve been busy bees, but in secret. Soon, we’re going to be busy bees in public.

Dan Mangan + Blacksmith. I feel that the new moniker encompasses the spirit of the project’s longstanding ensemble members. It takes a village to raise a fool.

“Blacksmith” is Gordon Grdina, Kenton Loewen, John Walsh, and often JP Carter, Tyson Naylor and Jesse Zubot.

And now, on to the goodies.

Well it’s about damn time, right? It’s been at least twelve hundred years since we’ve released new music. So here it is.

Vessel / Wants
Dan Mangan + Blacksmith

Wants is something I wrote for the end credits of a Canadian film called The Valley Below, which screened this week at The Toronto International Film Festival. There is one more screening Friday, Sept 12th. After watching the film, it occurred to me that all of the main characters wanted things they didn’t know how to ask for. It’s a beautifully shot film about Drumheller, Alberta, with some great performances. Keep an eye out for it.

The song Vessel is central to the score of Hector And The Search For Happiness, and occurs thematically throughout the film (as well as running over the end credits). Which leads me to…

The North American premiere of Hector And The Search For Happiness was this past Sunday at the Toronto International Film Festival. I was there. I even bought new shoes. It was previously assumed that you couldn’t take me anywhere. It is now suggested that maybe you can take me some places.

Jesse Zubot and I wrote and recorded the score for the film. I can’t believe how much I learned working on this project. It was a pleasure working with director Peter Chelsom and getting to meet fine actors like Simon Pegg, Christopher Plummer, Toni Collette, Rosamund Pike, Stellan Skarsgård & Jean Reno.

The song Vessel is integral to the score of Hector, and occurs thematically throughout the film (as well as closing it over the end credits). I hope you might see the film when it comes to your cinema of choice.

It’s already in theatres in Europe, and begins playing in North America on September 19th.

I hope you might see the film when it comes to your cinema of choice. You can watch the trailer HERE.

The wonderful gents of Bear’s Den have asked us to join them for a month of touring throughout the United States. We are very excited. Not only are we excited because it’s been at least twelve hundred years since we toured in the USA, but because we met Bear’s Den at the Edmonton Folk Festival and just had the worst time ever hanging out with them. Hopefully, we can rectify this by increased exposure at close proximity. Also on the tour is a good looking man from Holland named Christof.

We also have two exciting shows coming up in Toronto. One is the 1st birthday party for Indie88, a new and daring kind of radio station. We’re playing with our good buds and label siblings, Lowell and The Darcys. The show is technically sold out but you can still win tickets by listening to Indie88.

And this is insane. We’re playing Massey Hall. And if that wasn’t totally nuts enough, we’re being supported by Hayden who is one of my all-time favourite Canadian musicians. I love this man. Apparently this one is also nearly sold out which means that we’ve crossed into another time/space compendium where unicorns fart glow-in-the-dark silhouettes of Agent Dale Cooper.

February 28th, 2015 Toronto, ON Massey Hall TICKETS

It’s been peachy. I still love you.
