I’m writing again. I hope you don’t feel bombarded. But we have so many things to talk about. We just finished a trio tour of the USA with our pals Bear’s Den and Christof. We simply had a blast. It was as if a skin had formed atop our USA soup, and now we’ve given it a bit of a stir. I apologize that we failed to properly tour down there for nearly four years.
Big thanks to Bear’s Den. Big thanks to all the warm folks who came to the shows and shared a little piece of their lives with us.
I have a few things to discuss.
– In hopes of piquing peoples’ interest in regards to our new album Club Meds, which comes out officially on January 13th, we’re offering some songs to be available right away.
– One of those songs is our third “leaked” track from the album called Kitsch.
– Also, we’re announcing full European/UK/Canadian tours in the spring of 2015. You can call it a “World Tour”. Even though it’s not, really. I mean, we’re crossing a damn ocean, give me a break, right?
– If you believe in what we’re doing, maybe you’d help us spread the word
LISTEN TO “KITSCH” HERE
This is one of my favourite cuts f rom Club Meds. It will never be on the radio. It’s too long. Johnny wrote the bass-line, which is the bones of the song. I wrote some melodies and words, and the rest came together in the studio – Kenton’s insane polyrhythms and Gord’s sonic landscapes. Lyrically, the song was inspired by Milan Kundera’s explanation the word “kitsch” in The Unbearable Lightness Of Being, as in the origin of the word’s usage in 19th century Germany. To paraphrase, the word describes the stark naked reality of the things we put on a pedestal. It serves our sense of security to put ideas and concepts on a sacred level where we refuse to see the scaffolding behind the façade. But it’s not honest.
Seriously, though. Have I mentioned this new album? If you pre-order it, you’ll get immediate downloads of Vessel, Mouthpiece & Kitsch. You’l l also get our unconditional love. We might even give you an advance stream of the whole dang thing pretty soon (but more on that later..)
The truth is that there are ten million entities on this planet vying for your attention. People in board rooms spend lots of money trying to figure out how to get yours. We’re all aware of how the internet has changed the music industry. Personally, I believe strongly that it has improved the way people find music. It has democratized music, and diffused the power previously held in the hands of just a few music companies and spread it across a vast virtual canvas.
I think, to some extent, the internet has given me a career in music. I don’t mind when people download our music for free or “illegally”, or stream it rather than buy it. I believe that if people believe in something – if it hits them right in the guts – if they truly believe in a piece of art, or an artist, that they will want to support them in the ways that they are able to. I feel it when I attend a great show. I can’t wait to take something home with me. A t-shirt, LP or what have you.
Many times, while chatting with folks at the merch table at our own shows, I have reflected that the very best thing any of us can do to help artists we believe in is to just talk about them. With our friends. Online. However makes sense. It means so much more than dollars, because it is the conduit to actual human experiences – with art and with each other. Yes, artists need to pay rent and eat too, but that will all fall into place if the currency of enthusiasm is alive. No billboard or marketing campaign can replace real, genuine enthusiasm.
My aim here is not to sound pretentious, though it probably reeks of it. What I’m trying to say is that we could use your help spreading the word about this album. If we sold some copies, that would be pleasing. But more importantly, if this album that we worked so incredibly hard o n reached some hearts and minds, the currency of enthusiasm would give us a life in music. And at the end of the day, that’s all we really want. To amass a body of work we can be proud of. To experience connection through music. Okay I’m done.
We just recently added a last minute show in Toronto this holiday season. It’s a fundraiser for Virgin Mobile’s RE*Generation project that helps finds jobs for homeless youth.
Also, on Saturday, December 13th at 6:30pm we’ll be performing a free, short, stripped-down set at Red Cat Records, a great little record store in Vancouver. While there, you can pre-order Club Meds and pick up a ticket to our March shows at The Vogue Theatre.
